Sweet and Sour Chicken Recipe !

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

"These sweet and sour chicken have bell peppers and onions that give a delicate, delectably sweet contrast to the chicken, and the breading maintains its crunch on the outside while being coated in the sweet, spicy, and sticky sauce. This will be a good combination with some rice and drinks. One of the best dinner recipe to make at home."

Yield: 4 SERVINGS

Prep Time: 10 MINUTES

Cook time: 15 MINUTES

Total time: 25 MINUTES

Cuisine: Asian/Chinese

Category: Lunch/Dinner

Ingredients:

+ 2 boneless chicken breast

+ 1 tsp salt (6g)

+ 1/2 tsp ground black pepper(3g)

+ 1/2 tsp onion powder(3g)

+ 1/2 tsp cayenne(3g)

+ 1/2 tsp paprika(3g)

+ 1/4 tsp garlic powder (1.5g)

+ 1/2 cup flour(70g)

+ 1/4 cup cornstarch 4 tbsp)

+ bread crumbs for coating

+ 1 cup green bell pepper(diced)

+ 1 cup orange bell pepper(diced)

+ 1 medium yellow or white onion (diced)

+ 19.5 oz Beijing sweet and tangy sauce

( or you can make your own Beijing sauce)

Instructions:

1. Cut the chicken breast into pieces that are the same size as one another to promote even cooking.

2. In a mixing bowl, season the chicken with salt, black pepper, cayenne, paprika, onion powder and garlic powder.

3. Add the flour, cornstarch, and beaten egg. Mix all together until combined.

4.Roll in bread crumbs until evenly coated. Transfer to a platter.

5. In a deep frying pan, heat one inch of oil over medium heat. Keep the oil at 350°F by adjusting the heat. Popcorn chicken should be fried in tiny batches, with space between each piece and occasional flipping. Fry the chicken until it is golden brown and a thermometer inserted into its thickest part reads 165°F.

6. Fried chicken should be taken out of the oil and allowed to cool on a platter covered with paper towels. Set it aside.

7. In a hot skillet with 2-3 tbsp. of vegetable oil, sauté and caramelize the vegetables for 1-2 minutes. (1 medium diced yellow or white onion, 1 cup diced green bell pepper, 1 cup diced orange bell pepper, and 3 cloves minced garlic.)

8. Add the fried chicken and ready-made sweet and tangy sauce. (19.5 oz. Beijing Beef Sauce).

Note: You can make your own sweet and sour sauce if you prefer, but for me, I preferred a ready-made sauce to make this recipe easy, quick, and yet so delicious.

Also, never omit the onions. Even though some individuals may not like them, the onions and bell peppers are crucial for bringing the dish's flavors together. The onions and peppers help balance out the sweetness by adding a small amount of bitterness. If you don't already genuinely detest onions, I guarantee you'll be attempting to snag any extra pieces.
